Scaling/Polishing

What Is Dental Scaling?

Dental scaling, often referred to as a “deep cleaning,” is a common dental procedure that involves the thorough removal of plaque, tartar, and bacterial deposits from the teeth, especially below the gum line. Scaling is a more intensive cleaning than a regular dental cleaning, specifically targeting hard-to-reach areas where plaque has hardened into tartar (also known as calculus). It is especially important for people with gum disease, as it helps eliminate the bacteria causing inflammation and infection in the gums, reducing the risk of gum disease progression and tooth loss.

The Dental Scaling Procedure

The scaling process usually begins with an assessment by a dentist or dental hygienist, who checks for signs of gum disease, such as redness, swelling, or bleeding. Local anesthesia may be applied to numb the area and make the procedure more comfortable, particularly if there is a significant build-up of tartar or if the gums are inflamed. The dentist or hygienist then uses specialized tools, such as a handheld scaler or an ultrasonic scaler, to meticulously remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gums.

Ultrasonic scalers use high-frequency vibrations to loosen tartar, making it easier to remove while also flushing out bacteria and debris with a gentle stream of water. The handheld scaler is used to clean areas the ultrasonic tool may not reach. For patients with gum disease, dental scaling is often followed by root planing, a procedure that smooths the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth and reduce pockets where bacteria can accumulate.

Importance of Dental Scaling

Regular scaling is crucial for maintaining healthy gums and preventing gum disease. Left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis, an early form of gum disease, which can progress to periodontitis if not addressed. Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease that can result in gum recession, bone loss, and eventually, tooth loss. By thoroughly cleaning the teeth and removing bacteria-filled deposits, scaling reduces inflammation, prevents the spread of infection, and allows gums to heal, helping to prevent more severe dental and health issues.

In addition to its health benefits, scaling can also improve the appearance of the teeth by removing surface stains caused by plaque and tartar. This can leave teeth looking cleaner and brighter, contributing to a more attractive and confident smile. Dental scaling, along with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing long-term dental problems.
