Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged, decayed, or broken tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are commonly made of materials like porcelain, ceramic, metal, or resin, and are custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.

Treatment Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically begins with a thorough assessment by the dentist, who examines the tooth and may take X-rays to determine the extent of decay or structural damage. Once a crown is deemed necessary, the tooth is prepared by reshaping it to create a solid foundation. This step often involves filing down the tooth to fit the thickness of the crown, though if the tooth has significant decay or damage, the dentist may first use a filling material to build up the tooth structure. After shaping the tooth, an impression or digital scan is taken to capture its exact dimensions. This impression is sent to a lab to create the custom-fitted crown, a process that may take a couple of weeks. In the meantime, a temporary crown is usually placed to protect the tooth.

Why a Dental Crown Should Be Treated

Dental crowns play an important role in protecting and preserving a damaged or weakened tooth. By covering the tooth, the crown shields it from further wear, decay, or even fracture, which could eventually lead to tooth loss. Crowns also restore the tooth’s function, enabling the patient to chew comfortably and speak clearly. Beyond functional benefits, crowns improve the appearance of damaged teeth, creating a natural, attractive smile and boosting self-confidence. By treating the tooth with a crown, patients can preserve the natural tooth structure and avoid more complex procedures, such as extraction and replacement with dental implants. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential to maintain the crown and ensure the underlying tooth remains healthy.
